  • This ETF Buys Into Its Own Idea

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) have given rise to a variety of unique funds, and one of them is one that buys into itself - literally.

The PowerShares Buyback Achievers Portfolio Fund (PKW) holds a basket of companies that invest in themselves. It tracks the BuyBack Achievers Index, which is made up of about 254 companies.

The index's components must be incorporated in the United States, trade on a U.S. exchange and must have re-purchased at least 5% … [visit site to read more]

  • Net Short Euro Contracts Rose To Highest Level Since April 2008

Traders and economists often have differing views about currency movements. Most traders, like myself, go with the flow of the market, hitching onto the present, participating in the seemingly illogical game of speculation, and not wasting time questioning over whether a particular currency should actually be going higher or lower against another currency. The Russell 2000 lost 0.1% on the day, but had a great week with a gain of 2.6%.

  • Week Ahead In US Financial Markets

The week of August 18-22 will see a very light week of economic data on the calendar. Aside from Dallas Fed President Fisher’s comments on the US Economy on Wed, the only potentially market moving macro data for the week will be the Monday release of the PPI and Tuesday publication of the Housing Starts series for July. The remainder of the major data for the week will be released on Thursday when the weekly jobless claims series, the August Philadelphia Fed survey and the June index of leading … [visit site to read more]

  • IPO ETF Is Designed To Hold Up In Quiet Times

It's been pretty quiet on the initial public offering (IPO) front, which leads one to wonder what it could mean for the exchange traded fund (ETF) that contains them.

The First Trust IPOX 100 Index (FPX) tracks an index of the 100 top IPOs in the United States, measuring their performance by market cap. The fund rebalances quarterly. IPOs are added in on their seventh day of trading, to capitalize on a long-term "buy and hold" perspective. On their 1,000th day, … [visit site to read more]
