  • Is America's Financial Condition Careening Towards A Crisis?

It’s been debated many times: Who is responsible for the mess our nation’s finances are in — Democrats or Republicans?

The reality, of course, is that both sides share the blame. No matter how hard they try, partisans can’t take away from the fact that politicians on the left and the right have had plenty of opportunity to change things. But they haven’t.

Instead, with few exceptions, it seems like virtually anyone who gets elected to office — often on a platform based on change, … [visit site to read more]

  • Do Emerging Market ETFs Help You Diversify?

An interesting question has recently been brought up as to whether or not emerging market exchange traded funds (ETFs) truly help diversify one's portfolio.

Gary Gordon of ETF Expert points out that this depends on how one defines diversification. If investors are looking to reduce market risk by meshing assets that do not tend to move in the same direction, their investments must have little relationship, if any at all. Or, if one is looking to invest in a number of stock assets with … [visit site to read more]

  • An Overview Of Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs)

The overall concept behind exchange traded notes (ETNs) isn't exactly new, although the form they take today is.

An ETN is a debt instrument the issuer promises to pay a specified return, based on the market index's performance, and they trade throughout the day like a stock. So far this year, 63 ETNs have launched. Morningstar tracks 89, with $7.3 billion in assets. They're still small in number compared with ETFs: there are 732 in existence, with $586 billion management.

  • Freddie Mac Is Taking Measures To Slow The Loss Of Capital

Freddie Mac (FRE) is leaking capital out of every orifice. That is essentially what the GSE's are doing and what we have been writing about for many months. • The Three Signs That The Credit Crisis Has Yet To Hit Bottom

    By Keith Fitz-Gerald

“Have we seen the worst from the financial sector?”

The question - a very good one - came from an audience member following my global investing presentation at the Agora Wealth Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia. During my entire time there, the interest in the ongoing credit crisis was intense.

I took a deep breath and launched into my three-point response.

First, I’m encouraged by what I see lately but still believe there is a … [visit site to read more]

  • Energy Sector Weekly Chart And Support Levels

There has been a lot of wild action in the energy sector as of late, with much of it favoring the bears for the first time in a while.

Within the last hour, the US Energy Information Administration reported that crude oil inventories increased by 1.7 million barrels last week, compared to a consensus estimate of a 1.2 million decrease. This announcement has put considerable pressure on crude oil prices once again in morning trading, with the commodity now down 20% from the high of about a … [visit site to read more]

  • Whole Foods Wilts In A Sluggish Economy

Whole Foods Market Inc. (WFMI) has a reputation as a premium grocery store with premium prices, hence the unflattering nickname "Whole Paycheck". Its airy stores are beautifully fancy, the food selection is unique and diverse and its pre-packaged meals are more often than not a healthy alternative to other "fast food" options. This formula had been working well for the Austin, TX-based company and WFMI investors had profited from its success as its share price … [visit site to read more]

  • Larger Than Expected Fuel Inventories Have ETFs Hesitating

The inventory numbers are in, sending fuel prices lower and energy-related exchange traded funds (ETFs) sputtering while they figure out where to go next.

The supplies were larger than expected, an indicator that high prices are still cutting into demand, reports Stevenson Jacobs for the Associated Press. Oil dropped as low as $117.14 a barrel, its lowest point since May 2.

Distillate fuels, which include diesel and heating oil, also saw increased inventories: a jump of 2.8 million … [visit site to read more]

  • A Management Feat: Proctor & Gamble Tops Wall Street

It is rare to consider a $200-plus billion capitalization stock as nimble, but Proctor and Gamble's (PG) most recent quarterly performance could aptly be described as such. In this case, a difficult operating environment with slowing consumer spending and greatly higher input prices was confronted by PG management who raised prices as well as trimmed what costs they could.
